The Federal Aviation Agency has selected Middle Georgia College as the nation's top new collegiate air traffic control program.
MGC is part of the Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative, an FAA program designed to train new air traffic controllers. There are only 23 colleges approved to teach the course and MGC was judged number-one among the nine newly approved schools.
MGC received its award Monday morning from the FAA southern regional administrator, Douglas R. Murphy.
Program director Julie Clark said she thinks the new ranking will help the school's students get ahead.
"That is going to mean a tremendous amount for our students. That they will be able to compete nationally," Clark said. "It's validation for everything that we've been working on so hard, building a program from the ground up."
According to the FAA, about 800 of the 1800 air controllers it hired this year came from Collegiate Training Initiative programs.
